A dynamical adaptive tensor method for the Vlasov-Poisson system

چکیده
A numerical method is proposed to solve the full-Eulerian time-dependent Vlasov-Poisson system in high dimension. The algorithm relies on the construction of a tensor decomposition of the solution whose rank is adapted at each time step. This decomposition is obtained through the use of an efficient modified Progressive Generalized Decomposition (PGD) method, whose convergence is proved. We suggest in addition a symplectic time-discretization splitting scheme that preserves the Hamiltonian properties of the system. This scheme is naturally obtained by considering the tensor structure of the approximation. The efficiency of our approach is illustrated through time-dependent 2D-2D numerical examples.

Comparison of two Eulerian solvers for the four-dimensional Vlasov equation: Part II
In this second part, we carry out a numerical comparison between two Vlasov solvers, which solve directly the Vlasov equation on a grid of the phase space. The two methods are based on the semi-Lagrangian method as presented in Part I: the first one (LOSS) uses a uniform mesh of the phase space whereas the second one (OBI) is an adaptive method. The numerical comparisons are performed by solvin...
متن کاملStability for the gravitational Vlasov-Poisson system in dimension two
We consider the two dimensional gravitational VlasovPoisson system. Using variational methods, we prove the existence of stationary solutions of minimal energy under a Casimir type constraint. The method also provides a stability criterion of these solutions for the evolution problem. Key-words. متن کاملDissipative Perturbations of 3d Hamiltonian Systems
In this article we present some results concerning natural dissipative perturbations of 3d Hamiltonian systems. Given a Hamiltonian system ẋ = PdH, and a Casimir function S, we construct a symmetric covariant tensor g, so that the modified (so-called “metriplectic”) system ẋ = PdH + gdS satisfies the following conditions: dH is a null vector for g, and dS(gdS) ≤ 0. Along solutions to a dynamica...
متن کاملDynamical stability of collisionless stellar systems and barotropic stars: the nonlinear Antonov first law
We complete previous investigations on the dynamical stability of barotropic stars and collisionless stellar systems. A barotropic star that minimizes the energy functional at fixed mass is a nonlinearly dynamically stable stationary solution of the Euler-Poisson system. Formally, this minimization problem is similar to a condition of “canonical stability” in thermodynamics. A stellar system th...
متن کاملA cloudy Vlasov solution
We propose to integrate the Vlasov-Poisson equations giving the evolution of a dynam-ical system in phase-space using a continuous set of local basis functions. In practice, the method decomposes the density in phase-space into small smooth units having compact support. We call these small units " clouds " and choose them to be Gaussians of elliptical support. Fortunately, the evolution of thes...
